P90X Review: Avoiding the Workout Plateau

The first question that you may be asking yourself if you’re new to the world of fitness and working out is “What is a workout plateau?” No, it’s not a delightful picnic spot with a great view from which you do your daily workout. The workout plateau is the point at which, though you’re still doing your workout and giving it your all, you start to see diminishing returns on the results.

p90x and the workout plateauFor example, if you’re working out in order to lose weight, you may see a steady and significant weight loss in the first several weeks. However, after that, you’ll “plateau” and see minimal loss, loss that happens more slowly than it did at first or, worst of all, no loss. You may even see yourself put weight back on. If you’re working out to gain muscle mass, the same thing can happen. You’ll see a size and strength gain initially, but then you’ll see those results start to slow down or pause when you hit your plateau. As your body and mind become used to your workout schedule, the pace at which you achieve results slows or halts altogether. That doesn’t mean that your workout isn’t still valuable. It’s keeping you healthy, and there are most likely ways that you body is improving that aren’t as visible to you. However, you want trackable results! We understand.

One way to avoid the plateau effect is to use a workout designed by a professional trainer like Tony Horton. Professional trainers are aware of the plateau effect, and they’ll design workouts such as P90X that involve a mix of routines, strength training, cardio and aerobic training at increasing challenge levels so that you and your body never get bored and your plateau doesn’t happen as quickly. They’ll even create workouts that mix it up by using unique equipment like the P90X Resistance Bands and P90X Push Up Stands so that you get extra challenges in there after you’re ready to stop using only your body’s own weight and resistance.

At some point, everybody will plateau. Nobody’s body will keep rapidly improving forever. However, with a well designed workout that actively works against the plateau effect, you can experience great workouts and visible results for a much longer period of time!
