P90X and Conquering the Spartan Race

p90x and the spartan racePeople who undertake the P90X challenge have one thing in common: They are choosing extreme home fitness, and once they’ve mastered the challenge they are in ripped up, incredibly amazing shape. They’ve also, usually, become a little bit extreme themselves and ready to take on new challenges. In our never ending quest to find new ways for you to show off your great new, post-P90X body as well as to give you a reason to get that body and, as a bonus, a way to master a new challenge after you’ve brought out your inner-extreme athlete, we’re going to discuss how P90X can help you master the Spartan Race.

What is the Spartan Race?

The Spartan Race is a new adventure race that’s sweeping the country. Modeled after the training of the ancient Spartans, the race is a five kilometer obstacle course that combines cross country running with boot-camp like activities such as crawling in mud under barbed wire, rock climbing, hurdles, fire hurdles, climbing over a wall, water obstacles and rope scaling. Both men and women participate, and you’ll even see some costumes during the race. One thing that’s certain is that when you watch participants cross the finish line, they look exhausted. But they also look proud of their accomplishment.

How Can P90X Prepare You for the Spartan Race?

To complete and master the Spartan Race, you’ll need three things. Great cardio endurance for running, great lower and upper body strength for the obstacles and mental toughness. P90X and its follow-up, P90X Plus, get you all of those things. Through workouts like Cardio X, Plyometrics and Kenpo X, you’ll develop the cardio endurance you’ll need for a challenging cross-country run. P90X workouts are heavily focused on upper body strength training, which will leave you primed for rope climbing, wall climbing and pulling your body along through the crawling challenges. We particularly recommend focusing on the P90X chin-up workouts (you may want to get a P90X Chin Up Bar if you don’t have a place to do chin-ups in your home). Finally, if you can muster the mental toughness to complete P90X, you can certainly muster the mental toughness for the Spartan Race.

So, if your end goal is to complete one of the craziest, hardest, most fun while also challenging and, yes, extreme adventure races in North America, P90X can get you there. In fact, making the Spartan Race your end goal for P90X may just help motivate you through the ninety days of challenging workouts!
