Weight Loss Myth: Avoid All Fats

If you’re doing a workout such as Slim in 6, Hip Hop Abs or P90X, chances are that you’re trying to lose weight as well as tone up. If you’re trying to lose weight, the chances are also great that, along the way, somebody has told you to reduce how much fat you’re eating. While reducing fat is important to getting in shape and slimming down, it’s not true that you need to avoid all fats.

Lose weight with P90XIt’s true that, in order to lose weight, you’ll need to be conscientious about how much fat goes into your diet. You cannot lose weight if you’re packing down the fried cheese sticks every day of the week. However, the idea that you need to eliminate all fats from your diet is a falsehood. Firstly, your body requires a certain level of fat simply to function. Secondly, almost every food has some type of fat content. If you were to try to eliminate fat entirely, you’d find yourself not eating anything at all before long! The key is to understand the difference between “bad fats” and “good fats” and which ones you should eat!

Bad Fats! These are the types of fats that you want to avoid and reduce. There are two primarily bad fats. Saturated fats are the types of fats that you will find in fatty meat and dairy. These fats increase “bad” cholesterol, which in turn can lead to heart disease and cancer. The existence of saturated fat is often a reason why people promote the idea of meat reduction in diets. The second kind of bad fat is hydrogenated fats, which you may know by their more common name, trans-fats. These are man-made fats that are like saturated fats but stay hard at room temperature. Think of shortenings and fake butter. Sometimes, science does not create greatness.

Good Fats! There are, however, a number of good types of fats that your body actually very much needs to properly function. Again, there are primarily two types. Monounsaturated fats are natural fats that are lower in “bad” cholesterol and actually help maintain your levels of “good” cholesterol. You’ll find these in oils such as canola, olive and peanut oil as well as in most nuts. Not only are most monounsaturated fats good for you in general, most of them are also high in protein. Polyunsaturated fats are also natural fats and come in two groupings, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are found in fatty fish, and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fats are found in most types of seed oil.

So don’t think that you need to cut out all fats! It will make you crazy trying to do it, and it’s not even a healthy choice or life in general or for weight loss.
